Secretary Coffman’s Statement on Senate Bill 65
Showing Proof of Citizenship to Vote Is a Fundamental Rule of Law

Denver, January 24, 2007 – Secretary of State Mike Coffman released the following statement regarding Senate Bill 65 (Sen. Harvey). SB 65 would require voters to show proof of citizenship in order to register to vote:

“Our nation is built on the rule of law, and Senate Bill 65 re-affirms the fundamental principle that only citizens of this country may vote.

The right to vote is our most precious right as Americans and I wholeheartedly support Senator Harvey’s efforts to protect our voice.”

Debate on Senate Bill 65 was heard this afternoon in the Senate State, Veterans & Military Affairs Committee.
